Curriculum

The curriculum at West Jesmond Primary is enhanced by an extensive range of popular “Out of school” clubs and activities for pupils. These cover a broad range of interests including art, foreign languages, sport, crafts and ICT.

As well as being fun for pupils to participate in, extra curricular activities and experiences help children build their self confidence and develop their social skills.

Lunchtime and after-school activities include netball, football, swimming, dance, recorder playing, knitting, art and drama.

We offer additional musical instrument tuition to our children including brass, piano, wind and string.

Trips and excursions are a popular part of our curriculum and provide children with memorable learning experiences. Day excursions and residential trips take place throughout the school year to galleries, local attractions and historic sites such as Bede’s World and Hadrian’s Wall. Children in Year 6 attend a residential trip to Robin Wood in the Tyne Valley.

The school allotment

Lots of schools are committed to healthy living but we take things one step further at West Jesmond with our very own school allotment.

Here, children learn how food goes from earth to plate and are involved in the whole food production cycle from planting to harvest time.

Produce from the allotment is sold to raise funds for our school.

At West Jesmond we believe that music makes an invaluable contribution to the education of young people.

Extra-Curricular

West Jesmond provides a vibrant, musical extra-curricular life.
The clubs that are offered throughout KS2 are:
Orchestra, band, recorders, choir, djembe drumming and The School of Rock
In addition, the children are given many opportunities to perform. Each year, the choir visits the City Hall to take part in a collaborative concert with other primary schools within our pyramid and they also sing within the community and for charity. Last year, they visited a recording studio to record their first CD.
Every summer we hold a ‘Musical Showcase’ to share the musical activities that have been happening during the year and in year 6 the children put on a production with singing, dancing and playing. Over the past few years they have performed:  ‘West Side Story’, ‘Joseph’, ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and ‘Oliver!’
The School of Rock is currently in its third year and gives opportunities for year 6 children who may or may not already play an instrument, to rehearse and perform as part of a rock band.
In year 3, children also get the chance, as part of the curriculum, to learn to play the recorder and in year 4 they try the pocket trumpet which can give the children a brilliant introduction to brass playing.
Students are also offered opportunities for musical tuition provided by NEMCO from year 3 onwards and can choose from a range of wind, string and brass instruments.
