Hello to all of our Reception family,
Here are our new resources to support your learning at home as we head into the summer term. We have been so impressed with everything you have been sharing on Tapestry - you really have had some amazing ideas of how to enjoy this time together.These resources are more ideas for you to use, and cover what we we would be learning at school in this term. They focus around the topic of Life Cycles, Growth and Healthy Living.
The books we use as a focus are Oliver's Vegetables, The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Supertato! These books are fantastic for discussion around healthy eating, fruits and vegetables and where they come from, and looking at the life cycles of different things - from caterpillars to potatoes! They are also a good starting point for practising the days of the week.

Phonics
We hope you have found Oxford Owl a useful website to give your children additional reading books to enjoy.
The books are great and there are some lovely linked activities. And I'm sure you are finding lots of time to simply snuggle up and enjoy stories together. We will continue to put stories onto Tapestry from us, they seem quite popular with the children.
During the Summer Term, we would not be teaching the children any new sounds, we would simply build upon their already existing knowledge to build up their skills as a reader. Our new focus would be to look at reading longer words that can be broken down into smaller parts - such as toothbrush - tooth-brush, chimpanzee - chim-pan-zee or Manchester - Man-ches-ter. This will help children grow in confidence reading words which may seem long, but only contain sounds they already know.
We would also be teaching the children to read words containing a consonant blend at the beginning - such as fl, br, st, cl, or pl. This again helps the children become more competent readers - although they are not learning any more sounds, they are learning to quickly blend some sounds together, making it easier to identify the word.
Below is a sound mat containing examples of consonant blends, and some activities for you to try at home.
You may also find the website https://www.ictgames.com/mobilePage/index.html useful -it has lots of online phonics and reading games you may not have tried. The Blending Bingo is a personal favourite!
Maths
We have loved seeing all of the everyday Maths opportunities you have been finding at home - from measuring when you are baking, to counting how many flowers you can pick, and all that adding dice scores during family board games. This is the best way to continue with Maths - finding a way to count, recognise numbers, add and subtract as you go about your day. Keeping these key skills going will help your child when they return to school.
White Rose is a wonderful website for Maths resources, and they have produced a set of daily maths activities for the Summer term. At the moment there is planning for Summer weeks 1 and 2 (the first week uses Supertato as its story - which is perfect!). They will continue to add plans as the weeks go by. As our focus this term we would be using the books we mentioned as a starting point for looking at patterns, symmetry, days of the week, simple time language (such as before, after that, today, tomorrow) and shapes. Below are some resources to help you cover these objectives at home with your children. But again, any time you spend on counting, recognising numbers and doing simple calculations, would be very beneficial.
