Year 2

Mrs Lucy Edwards

Class Teacher

This is my fifth year teaching at West Jesmond, and my second year teaching in Year 2. I love teaching in Key Stage One and supporting our children as they embark on their school careers. I endeavour to develop a lifelong love of learning and particularly enjoy teaching Humanities lessons. I lead on the Eco Committee and our Eco Curriculum alongside Miss Jordan. My interests outside of school include gardening, reading and yoga.

Mr David Mansfield

Class Teacher

I am in my second year teaching here at West Jesmond and my first in Year 2. I am very excited to explore the Year 2 curriculum with the children and I am particularly looking forward to teaching PE and science lessons. In my spare time I like to play sport and enjoy an active and healthy lifestyle.

Mr Ed Snelders

Class Teacher

I am now in my ninth year at West Jesmond and my fourth in Year 2. I also have responsibility for English across the school. I enjoy teaching a wide range of subjects, especially when the children are able to make their own connections and discoveries through our collective efforts. In my spare time you will usually find me watching or playing sport, participating in quizzes, walking the dog or helping my daughter with her homework!

Welcome

Welcome to the Year 2 page. Below you will find useful dates and routines that will help support your child's learning.

We often post announcements via our 'Home Learning' Seesaw pages, so please do ensure to check this on a regular basis. If you have any essential information to pass on to your class teacher, please use their email addresses which can be found in their reading diaries, as diaries will no longer be checked daily for notes.

Monday - Every Monday your child's reading book will be changed providing you have signed their reading diary to inform us that they have completed their book. Please write a short comment about how your child has found their latest text, children are very welcome to make their own comments about their books too. Additional books are also available on Bug Club (log ins can be found in your child's reading diary).

Tuesday - Tuesday afternoons are when the Year 2 teachers have their PPA (planning, preparation and assessment) time out of class. You will notice a different teacher dismissing them at the end of the day.

Wednesday - Wednesday is our PE day. Please ensure your child comes to school wearing their PE kit. As we approach the winter months, jogging bottoms and trainers will help ensure your child keeps warm as all PE is now taking place outside. Please also feel free to send your child with their school jumpers over the top of PE kit to help keep them warm.

Wednesday is also homework day. Each week we will set a task via the Seesaw app, which you should already have a log in for. If you do not have a log in, or are no longer able to access your child's home learning page, please let your class teacher know and they will be happy to send you a new code. This task is to be completed by the following Monday, when it will then receive feedback from your child's class teacher.

Friday - Spellings will be set via Seesaw every Friday for a test the following Friday morning. Please help your child to practise their spellings to help them feel confident during  the test.

How to Help at Home

• Reading using the school reading books and Bug Club.
• Regular reading together of a range of texts.
• Develop a love of reading, encourage seeking out favourite authors or style of books.
• Look for as many opportunities to write as possible, writing means more when it has a purpose.
• Push presentation and correct spelling patterns when writing at home.
• Maths - counting games, helping total small amounts when shopping.
• Real life contexts are really useful for applying maths e.g. baking, measuring distances.
• Telling the time to 15 minute intervals.
• After Christmas practise times tables (2s, 3s, 5s, 10s).
